Camera use & privacy

Check local privacy, audio-recording and building rules before installation.

This page is general information to help you use SmileCam sensibly. It isn’t legal advice. Privacy, surveillance, audio-recording, tenancy and building rules vary by location and change over time. Check the rules that apply where you live if something matters to you.

Where you point it

  • Aim the camera at your own driveway, entrance or vehicle and collect only the footage you need.
  • Avoid neighbours’ windows, yards and other places where people reasonably expect privacy.
  • Use region detection in the app to limit alerts to the area you want to watch.

Audio rules vary

Audio and conversation recording can be regulated more strictly than video, and consent requirements vary by country and state. SmileCam’s microphone and speaker are intended as an in-room intercom. Check the law where you live before recording audio.

Renting and shared property

  • SmileCam mounts to the inside of the glass without drilling and can be removed when you move.
  • Leases, strata or body-corporate by-laws, HOA rules and condominium rules vary. Check your agreement and building rules before installation.
  • Do not place the adhesive pad on glass film or tint you do not own.

Sharing footage

  • You can provide relevant footage to police or another appropriate authority when reporting an incident.
  • Think carefully before posting identifiable footage publicly. Public accusations can create legal and safety issues.
  • Secure the camera, card and account so only authorised people can access footage.

Where to check

Check your state and local privacy, surveillance, audio-recording, tenancy and shared-property rules, or get legal advice for your situation.
